2017 Can/Am Veterans Cup Recap

Posted on June 01, 2017 at 12:00 AM

Hello Veterans

The 2017 Can/Am Veterans Cup is in the books.

Once again it was a great success.

145 fencers in 175 weapons participated, somewhat less than the previous year, at the Vango Toronto Fencing Centre, in Markham.

Our American Veterans family once again attended in great numbers winning 55 medals.

Most of the best Canadian Veterans participated, coming away with 26 medals

Fencers from Hong Kong and the Philippines were among the participants.

Unfortunately we missed our European Veterans. The European Veterans Individual Championships were held in Italy at the same time.

Twenty seven teams competed in all weapons.

Competition was tough, camaraderie was great, and the level of fencing was truly World Class. Nine World Championships and seven Commonwealth Championships medalist participated. It is safe to say that the Can/Am Veterans Cup is at par with any Veterans tournament in the Americas.

From the feedback, our DT (Dan Banks and his team) ran a superb tournament efficiently and as quickly as possible. The refereeing was very good all around.  Armory headed by the dedicated Pat Morrow, received a lot of praise.

Regional councillor, for the City of Markham and York region, Mr. Joseph Li was present at the competition.

The Gala Dinner/Dance on Saturday was attended by 93 fencers, the Executive Director of the CFF as well as the President of the OFA were present, to support and show their solidarity to Veterans Fencing.

A certificate was presented to the Veterans Committee by the Council and Mayor of the City of Markham, for organizing the event.

This year’s honoree was Jane Eyre, USA, she was presented a plaque by the Veterans Committee of the Canadian Fencing Federation, for her great accomplishments in and dedication to Veterans fencing.

Women’s Champion at Arms was awarded to: Anne-Marie Walters, USA

Men’s Champion at Arms was awarded to: Kyle Foster, Canada

Canadian fencers swept the Men’s Epee competition.

US fencers did the same in Women’s Epee and Foil.

Our own indefatigable Mark Ballard, won a total of 6 medals.

Our thanks to; Vango management and staff, all officials, our hard working volunteers, generous sponsors and our participating Veterans fencers.

Have a great summer; we’ll see you all (and more veteran fencers) at Can/Am Veterans Cup 2018
